Sound as Vibration

Els Viaene investigates sound as a physical phenomenon: a vibration, a wave, a variation in air pressure. How can I shape sound into matter, manifesting itself as a tangible, visible medium?

At the Museum of History of Science UGent she re-enacted a series of historical sound probes from the 18th Century to render sound vibrations visible. Using mirrors, snares, sticks, smoke, and dust she continued the research in the studio.

At Overtoon she focuses more specifically on the visual and ephemeral qualities of smoke, air and dust in relation to sound as a vibration.
